SOME TRIP

Back at the mosque Mohammed VI, Wilder sat inside the rental car running the AC. Across the plaza, Samuel sat under a cluster of palm trees. Wilder jumped the curb and drove across the plaza’s ceramic tiles. Rolling down his window, he asked, “You still up for taking me to the beach, Samuel? It couldn’t make my vacation any worse.” He figured if he was going to die he might as well see the Mediterranean first.

Samuel admonished him. “You can’t drive on this plaza. Get back on the street.” Unconcerned, Wilder pulled forward slowly with Samuel walking alongside the car. “OK, Wilder. Let’s go to Cap de l’eau. It’s the perfect beach town and I know a very nice restaurant—”

“Ease up on the tour-guide thing, will ya?” said Wilder.

“Very well.”

“Can you drive? I’m so tired I can’t see straight.”

“Not a problem. May I recommend the hotel Brise de l’ocean?”

“I can’t wait,” said Wilder sarcastically.

Once inside the hotel room, Wilder face-planted on one of the twin beds. Samuel asked, “What more can I do for you?”

“Just leave me alone for a while,” said Wilder.

“Of course. I’ll wait in the car and be ready at a moment’s notice.”

After a few hours of sleep, Wilder called his airline but couldn’t change his flight. He thought to himself he could wait two more days to fly home. What difference would it make? If a spy or government official came for him, they would never find the hidden stream on his laptop.

Wilder pulled up the video from Jerada. He watched the whole thing again, replaying the ambush scene with Team KrayBULL opening fire and all the people dying. Wilder assumed correctly that KrayBULL were American Spec Ops. Their movements were precise, and they were perfectly positioned for a surprise attack. Wilder wondered what went down before the gunfire. What was in that suitcase? He rewatched Perez strapping the suitcase to his pack and the other men loading dead bodies in the Humvee. At the end of the clip, Wilder froze the frame on Hawthorne’s face. He was definitely the man Wilder encountered at the power line.

Wilder shivered at the thought of Hawthorne shooting him up in that tree. He shut his laptop and cradled it while drifting off. Startling awake, he called room service and ordered a twenty-dollar cheeseburger with two sides of bacon and a slice of chocolate cake. He scarfed it all down, so hungry he even ate the parsley sprig. Stepping out onto his patio, he stared out at the sea. Something had shifted in Wilder’s spirit—maybe because his days seemed numbered, maybe because he was holding highly sensitive intel.

He carefully calculated his next moves. He figured now was the time to take his biggest risks, because he now had both the professor’s code and the video. Whether or not someone came to kill him—today, tomorrow or any other day—he had come too far to not protect the intel.

With the sun setting, Wilder strolled out to the rental car. He told Samuel he didn’t need his services anymore and gave him a generous tip.
